In 2002, a conversation in a small New Mexico town revealed that area residents used select natural clays for cleaning, washing, and polishing. By 2003, hand sampling of promising soils over a large area of Southern Colorado and New Mexico resulted in 40-50 samples being tested in the lab. Only 3-4 of these samples were found to have the characteristics needed to make the ideal clay for a firming - microdermabrasive combination. In 2004, extensive sampling in these areas produced enough clays to develop a processing and filtration technique, which would result in a highly selective particle size. This premium clay material is exactly what was needed to create Desert Magic!

Taken from at least a meter below ground and below the organic layer, the clays are found in uninhabited areas. They are then triple-filtered for highest quality. This includes a very secretive filtration process which removes large crystals that can scratch, and small particles that can clog. The optimum size for a fine microabrasive is 75 microns. By comparison, microdermabrasion using salt, which is about 4 times, or 300 microns! Particles of that size are very hard on the skin. Finally, Desert Magic clays are sterilized and classified based on color and amount of microabrasive present.
